weekend sewing giveaway

Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross is finally here in my hands. I've been waiting patiently to see it. I actually laughed out loud when this cover was chosen because that is ME balancing up in that tree. I never intended to be the cover model, it's just easiest to use whomever is around when you are off in Vermont on a photo shoot, it's a good thing I shaved my legs that morning!

The back of the cover shows some of the projects in the book, a great mix of clothes, bags, aprons, cute ideas for kids, and even a pup tent to relax in when you're all done with sewing. All the projects in the book are easy enough to finish in a weekend.

When you take the jacket off the book you can see one of Heather's patterns from her Kokka line "Rabbits and Race Cars". We thought it was a nice little surprise.

Heather actually illustrated all of the how-to's in the book, I love her drawing style. To see more of the photos in this book, visit the photo gallery.

Each book also includes two huge pull out pattern sheets for the projects in the book. (And believe me, it was tricky to fit all those projects on there!)

You may not realize that book publishing is a long, slow process. The photo shoots for this book were shot way back in the summer of 2007, and Heather was working on the actual patterns and projects a long time prior to the actual shooting. The photos are then edited, and the manuscript finished and edited. I designed the book last year, between February and July, sending it back and forth with Melanie Falick and her team. So almost a year later it's been printed, bound, shipped, and finally is here in my hands.

And I'm happy to pass it along to you. Leave a comment letting us know your favorite way to spend a weekend, and my little helpers and I will pick a winner Tuesday evening, March 17th. (Comments will close at 8 PM Tuesday PST.. Wow! That's a LOT of comments!)

Favorite weekend activities for the Fitts family of four: smocking, reading, hiking, walking, special breakfasts, and yummy dinners! I have trouble narrowing it beyond that.

A nice sunny weekend in New York; a visit to the farmers' market, making a quiche and salad, a trip to the park. Challah bread french toast, at home or at the restaurant nearby, a visit to Purl and Purl Patchwork, a little crafting time, fresh pasta with veggies from the market.

That book looks full of amazing projects! My favorite way to spend a weekend would include sewing, baking, an afternoon nap, a walk or bike ride in the sunshine, a nice dinner with hubby, a movie and popcorn...why are weekends only two days long?

my favorite way to spend weekends is outdoors as much as possible.

I love to spend the weekend spending the days drifting to the park and around our yard with the boys, and the evening sewing in the basement or sharing tea with my husband.

my Mother in Law would love this book! My favorite way to spend the weekend is playing in the backyard with the kids and enjoying lovely weather.

At the farm house, I awake to the aroma of egg sandwiches and the sound of my sister grinding coffee. A to-go mug in hand, we stroll down to the farmer's market where a conglomerate of Vermont artisans and farmers gather. Our eyes widen at the site of greens and baked goods and our next two meals are planned and bought. Then the weight of house projects and afternoon adventures lure us back home. Old dressers to repaint and gardens to turn over and before we know it, dinner. Saturdays are my favorite, especially when my sister puts maple syrup in the coffee.

My favorite weekends always start with sleeping in, followed by more laid back activites with the kids and hubby: movies, sometimes; park, sometimes; shopping, almost every weekend.

My favorite way to spend a weekend is down the shore, sitting in the sun, reading my favorite magazine, watching my 2 year old son (still my baby) play in the sand and water with his wonderful Daddy. Early mornings on the boardwalk. Eating Curly Fries at 10 am and Sam's pizza at noon! Going to bed at 8 from the exhaustion of the beach, sun and boards.

Fall/Winter: Sleep-in, get up and make pancakes and sausage. This reminds me of my dad, who always made this for me on weekends. Then go to the library, grocery store, p.o., and maybe tidy up a little. Chores out of the way, it's yarn or book store time. I order a cup of tea, sit and knit, listening to NYC yak around me. See him later.

Spring/Summer: Make lunch night before, get up early and make same pancake breakfast. Take train and ferry to park or beach. I bring knitting, my writing, Ipod. He brings whatever he wants to do. Drink ice tea and knit wherever. Run around a bit, if in park, splash around a bit if at beach.

Just thinking about this makes me feel good. Thanks for opportunity to write about this while at desk today...

Relaxing with the family, baking and sewing, if I'm really lucky a couple of hours without the kids! That's a great weekend.
Would love to win! thanks, you did a great job with it, looks amazing.

Beach Club! Even though we haven't done it in years, my first summer in NY my pals and I made a point of going to a different beach (almost) every weekend. I, being an un-stopable knitter, would tote my crazy projects along without fail. So my perfect weekend is this: sitting confidently in a bikini (YES! bikini! who cares!!!) on my homemade beach quilt, under an umbrella or huge sun hat, listening to the waves, sand clinging to my toes.... knitting something for me, not work.

One of our favorite things to do is have a movie picnic. We love to get fruits, veggies, and dips and eat them while we lounge on blankets and pillows watching a movie. Sadly with a two-year-old it usually means we watch Cars, but it's still fun.

wow!...that'a a lot of comments. I guess I'll throw my hat in the ring! The perfect weekend to me would be sleeping in just a little, coffee at Starbucks, trip to the Farmer's Market, a little sewing, a little game playing, a little cooking. Man, that sounds good!

My favorite way to spend a weekend would have to start with a great big breakfast with my husband and girls and then a nice walk to the park, come back home and give the little ones a nap (so that I can have some time to sew of course) and then spend the afternoon planting new flowers and playing in the yard and taking pictures. Making a yummy pizza for dinner and curling up on the couch with all of the books we can read to the girls in an eventing and then after the kids go to bed I would probably spend a little more time sewing and chatting with my husband... notice I didnt clean at all ;-)

I love to take the train home from college--a five hour ride through the country and then seeing my mom and dad at the end of it? Perfect.
