weekend sewing giveaway
Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross is finally here in my hands. I've been waiting patiently to see it. I actually laughed out loud when this cover was chosen because that is ME balancing up in that tree. I never intended to be the cover model, it's just easiest to use whomever is around when you are off in Vermont on a photo shoot, it's a good thing I shaved my legs that morning!
The back of the cover shows some of the projects in the book, a great mix of clothes, bags, aprons, cute ideas for kids, and even a pup tent to relax in when you're all done with sewing. All the projects in the book are easy enough to finish in a weekend.
When you take the jacket off the book you can see one of Heather's patterns from her Kokka line "Rabbits and Race Cars". We thought it was a nice little surprise.
Heather actually illustrated all of the how-to's in the book, I love her drawing style. To see more of the photos in this book, visit the photo gallery.
Each book also includes two huge pull out pattern sheets for the projects in the book. (And believe me, it was tricky to fit all those projects on there!)
You may not realize that book publishing is a long, slow process. The photo shoots for this book were shot way back in the summer of 2007, and Heather was working on the actual patterns and projects a long time prior to the actual shooting. The photos are then edited, and the manuscript finished and edited. I designed the book last year, between February and July, sending it back and forth with Melanie Falick and her team. So almost a year later it's been printed, bound, shipped, and finally is here in my hands.
And I'm happy to pass it along to you. Leave a comment letting us know your favorite way to spend a weekend, and my little helpers and I will pick a winner Tuesday evening, March 17th. (Comments will close at 8 PM Tuesday PST.. Wow! That's a LOT of comments!)

Friday night is a definite date night with my man. Saturday morning we turn up the music and dance like crazy while we get the chores and house cleaned up, then we reward ourselves with a fun family activity....one of our favorites is going to the beach! Nothing is better than family time on the beach, soaking up the sun!
Anything that involves a lot of laughter, good food, and quality time with family and friends is probably one of my favorite weekends...no matter what it is!!
wow- i love give-aways! I also LOVE your blog. and Heather Ross. and my favorite way to spend a saturday is.... waking up early to sunshine and birdies singing- my cats are snuggled at the foot of the bed, keeping my feet warm. Clarke (the best husband) walks into the room with a tray of coffee and french toast. I turn on the TV and the goonies just started. We lay in bed watch the goonies and eat breakfast. Suddenly we have a jolt of energy (or is that the coffee?) we jump in the car and hit the flea markets and thrift stores. Find fabulous furniture or frames or fabric or whatever and rush back home to CREATE! spend the afternoon outside CREATING, drinking beer and bar-b-q-ing with the neighbors. In bed by 10. AAAAHHHHHH PERFECT.
On the weekends I love waking up to the sound of our 5 month old Lucy babbling. We bring her into bed with us and learn new ways to make her laugh. Also having my husband home to help take care of her, that way I have time to sew and use all the fabric I buy from Purl. I'm addicted to their fabric! I also work on Lucy's photo album.
What a lovely book, so exciting! Our favorite way to spend the weekend would be the farmer's market on an early Saturday morning, kids napping in the afternoon, and wine and grilling in the evening and a whole not of NOTHING on Sunday! Can you tell I am looking forward to the better weather ahead? :)
We love going somewhere as a family on Saturday, and then spending Sunday at church and home.
We love getting out of the house early to beat the brunch crowds. Having the whole day with just my husband. Eating, drinking, cuddling. That is a perfect weekend.
I love waking up late (difficult with two boys) and heading to the bakery for coffee and goodies and off to the farmer's market to pick up ingredients for the night's dinner with friends...that sounds about perfect.
would love a copy of that wonderful book. i just finished organizing my new sewing nook!
checked your book out at the store today...wonderful! Can't wait to pick up a copy!!!
My favorite weekends include sleeping in, playing with my kids, baking something sweet, and then quiet time for me and my knitting...or my book...or my hubby... :)
Thanks for having a give-away. I found your blog a month or so ago and amy enjoying every post.
I love to sleep in (anything past 6:30 is a bonus). Eat a breakfast of scrambled eggs and veggies, putz around the house picking up, make a shopping list, start the laundry. Spend some time sewing, knitting or creating of some type. Go for a walk with a friend(s). Watch a movie and drink some wine with my husband. Go to the gym with my daughter. Make a meal with leftovers to eat during the week. There are so many ways to make a favorite weekend.
Weekends usually find me playing chauffeur to my two boys, going from swimming to soccer to tennis and trying to fit grocery shopping in there too. I'd love to spend a lazy hour or two with a good book, or just enjoying the warmth from a mug of hot tea... maybe when they're older?
My newest favorite weekend activity is trying to learn how to sew with my new sewing machine. I have made a ton of pillows and am moving on to curtians. I would love to try some easy patterns.
Before I had my two little ones my answer to this question would have been so different. I always knew my favorite ways to spend a weekend. Now with my three year old and 10 month old I feel like we have not quite figured out what a weekend should or could look like. We're still in the land of nap schedules and pre-walking/weening. This limits us quite a bit. These days I enjoy the simple pleasures of having one more adult in the house on the weekend to talk to, play with, and sometimes babysit while I slip away to the fabric store/yarn store for a little break :). And, when spring comes, look out world-weekends will be spent outside. This book by Heather Ross is on my list because the projects look like something I could at least get started on during a weekend. Thank you for the giveaway. I am a new reader of your blog. It's great.
our weekends are spent with the kids as they're away at boarding school during the week. they usually bring some friends home with them as well, so there's a houseful of teenagers!! i'd love to say that i spend my weekends sleeping in, reading the paper whilst drinking a hot chocolate and lazing about watching movies or maybe getting some sewing done, but that's just not a reality i'm afraid!!
It should involve hiking, lots of coffee, homemade bread and soup, long naps, and not answering the phone.
This looks amazing! I'd love to get my hands on a copy and tackle some of these weekend projects (in addition to all the reading, coffee drinking and cross-stitching I already indulge in).
My favorite way to spend a weekend? Spending time with grandbabies, knitting, and making album pages are some of my favorite things! Can't wait until this weekend with the babies!
What a terrific-sounding (and looking!) book! Congrats on being the cover girl. ;)
I love to spend the weekend at home, cooking, sewing, reading blogs, going for a walk with my daughter and my husband. In ohter words: enjoying.
