weekend sewing giveaway
Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross is finally here in my hands. I've been waiting patiently to see it. I actually laughed out loud when this cover was chosen because that is ME balancing up in that tree. I never intended to be the cover model, it's just easiest to use whomever is around when you are off in Vermont on a photo shoot, it's a good thing I shaved my legs that morning!
The back of the cover shows some of the projects in the book, a great mix of clothes, bags, aprons, cute ideas for kids, and even a pup tent to relax in when you're all done with sewing. All the projects in the book are easy enough to finish in a weekend.
When you take the jacket off the book you can see one of Heather's patterns from her Kokka line "Rabbits and Race Cars". We thought it was a nice little surprise.
Heather actually illustrated all of the how-to's in the book, I love her drawing style. To see more of the photos in this book, visit the photo gallery.
Each book also includes two huge pull out pattern sheets for the projects in the book. (And believe me, it was tricky to fit all those projects on there!)
You may not realize that book publishing is a long, slow process. The photo shoots for this book were shot way back in the summer of 2007, and Heather was working on the actual patterns and projects a long time prior to the actual shooting. The photos are then edited, and the manuscript finished and edited. I designed the book last year, between February and July, sending it back and forth with Melanie Falick and her team. So almost a year later it's been printed, bound, shipped, and finally is here in my hands.
And I'm happy to pass it along to you. Leave a comment letting us know your favorite way to spend a weekend, and my little helpers and I will pick a winner Tuesday evening, March 17th. (Comments will close at 8 PM Tuesday PST.. Wow! That's a LOT of comments!)

I love catching up on projects that I was unable to finish during the week, since I have a whole day worth of uninterrupted time!
My weekend routine starts with the a mug of strong coffee as I relax with the huge Saturday newspaper--I love separating each section and combing through inch by inch. On sunnier days (soon!), we walk to the farmer's market. I love chatting with other vegetable lovers and strolling by mounds of new potatoes in yellows, reds, and mottled blues!
Visit the farmer's market on Saturday morning, chat with some friendly organic farmers, hang out at the beach, sit in my favorite cafe sipping a latte, writing and people watching. See an indie flick or a foreign film at the Cable Car Cinema in Providence, wake up on Sunday morning to the smell of bacon frying and coffee brewing, join my husband in the kitchen to make some crepes with berries, laze about and read in the sunshine, go for a nature walk, take some photographs, ah...
I have my fingers crossed! I have been absolutely lusting after Weekend Sewing ever since I spied a copy in my local bookstore!
My favorite way to spend a weekend is listening to NPR in bed and then a nice long walk in the woods.
My favorite way to spend a weekend would be, having my big family or close friends for sunday brunch at my house. We dont see our family and friends very often because of distance. The women will spend the whole weekend cooking together while sharing silly stories, our children on the kitchen floor playing and men watching some sports in the living room. The brunch will lasts forever and we will laugh and cry our hearts out together! at the end, we will make promises to meet again soon, often because of our busy schedules, we wont make it but the idea of it feels very comforting.
For myself, a weekend is a close to perfect as it can get if it includes coffee, something sweet to nibble on, laughter from my children and a somewhat tidy house...everything else that may happen is just a bonus!!
Pancake breakfast, spring walk, an afternoon nap, and an enjoyable dinner.
My favorite way is to hang out with my husband and either cook or go out for really good food.
The kids would have spent the night at Grandma's house, so I could wake up whenever I wanted. The morning would start with heading to Bongo Java for coffee, bagels and the NY Times with my husband. There I would leave him (temporarily :)). I would then head to a book store to buy a new fiction novel, a baking book and a craft book. Next, I would stop by the fabric store or Michael's for an evening project. I'd work on that when I got home, then reward myself with some reading time. Husband would grill dinner, we'd have a glass of wine, and actually speak to eachother uninterrupted over a warm plate of adult dinner. No mac and cheese or hotdogs. Then, we'd go out for a movie. This day may need more than 24 hours.
My husband and I just finished making our mahogany, dining table and chairs. Now our weekends will be filled up making wedding gifts. I think we will start with Morris chairs.
Ooh, this looks wonderful.
The best weekend would be spent in beautiful weather outside with the kids, maybe at a festival, and then doing crafts during naptime.
I ususally spend my weekend playing around with my little on year old boy. It's a blast. Sometimes, i have to work a couple hours on Satuday, but it's not so bad. I also usually do a little cleaning, and then work a little on a project. i never seem to have time to work a whole lot on a project, but I do a little, and so it takes me a while to get anything finished. I spent 3 weeks picking out the fabric I am going to use on my son's new quilt, and now, this weekend, I get to finally start on it! ha! I hope I pick up the pace becauseI don't want this to take years!
thanks for all the info on the new book! sounds great!
thanks!
This weekend I am listening to my favorite local bands, doing serious spring cleaning, opening up all of of the windows in my house, walking outside in the wind and sun, writing a letter to my brother, making hummus, and sewing! It couldn't get any better than this! What a lovely book :)
We play outside for long stretches of time, even during the snowy winter, followed by additional relaxing time. Or we take an hour or so drive to explore, such as visiting a glassblower's studio. Best of all, the weekend is our time to eat out, and we usually favor delicious, affordable, ethnic foods. The book is beautiful, and I've been wishing for it. Thank you!
sleeping in + getting brunch outside + a nice walk and lots of laughing with friends...
Currently, in my fav comfy pajama pants and sweatshirt with a good book, some good blogs, and a knitting project. Waiting for summer and days spent by the pool...
Brooke, I love your blog! I am so impressed that you're a mom of two sweet kids and manage to get so many beautiful projects done. I only have one and barely have time! My favorite way to spend a weekend is with my husband and son, enjoying nature (in the summer) or crafting something warm, cozy and beautiful (in the winter). Love this book!
Pre-Cook a nice family dinner in the morning, go someplace with family or play in the park, taking pictures of kids and DH then come home and eat what was pre-cooked in the morning...relaxing kinda day.
My favorite way to spend a weekend is with filled with lots of time outside with my kids, swinging, running, grilling, blowing bubbles, watching clouds, painting, and GIGGLING.
I love to get up and read the paper and my blog lists before the little ones wake up- while enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Then I love to spend time with my family. On Saturday night while my husband works on Sundays sermon, I love to get into my sewing room and work on all of my "projects." Thanks for the chance! I would LOVE this book.
