weekend sewing giveaway
Weekend Sewing by Heather Ross is finally here in my hands. I've been waiting patiently to see it. I actually laughed out loud when this cover was chosen because that is ME balancing up in that tree. I never intended to be the cover model, it's just easiest to use whomever is around when you are off in Vermont on a photo shoot, it's a good thing I shaved my legs that morning!
The back of the cover shows some of the projects in the book, a great mix of clothes, bags, aprons, cute ideas for kids, and even a pup tent to relax in when you're all done with sewing. All the projects in the book are easy enough to finish in a weekend.
When you take the jacket off the book you can see one of Heather's patterns from her Kokka line "Rabbits and Race Cars". We thought it was a nice little surprise.
Heather actually illustrated all of the how-to's in the book, I love her drawing style. To see more of the photos in this book, visit the photo gallery.
Each book also includes two huge pull out pattern sheets for the projects in the book. (And believe me, it was tricky to fit all those projects on there!)
You may not realize that book publishing is a long, slow process. The photo shoots for this book were shot way back in the summer of 2007, and Heather was working on the actual patterns and projects a long time prior to the actual shooting. The photos are then edited, and the manuscript finished and edited. I designed the book last year, between February and July, sending it back and forth with Melanie Falick and her team. So almost a year later it's been printed, bound, shipped, and finally is here in my hands.
And I'm happy to pass it along to you. Leave a comment letting us know your favorite way to spend a weekend, and my little helpers and I will pick a winner Tuesday evening, March 17th. (Comments will close at 8 PM Tuesday PST.. Wow! That's a LOT of comments!)

As long as my whole family is together, husband and kids, it doesn't matter what we do over the weekends. Although my older daughter will tell you that all we want to do is play princess in the snow castle her daddy built for her. It's little more than a giant mound of snow with some steps shoveled out of the side, but we use our imaginations and can spend hours out there. I guess that'd be my favorite way to spend the weekend, after all. Outside with the family.
And gorgeous book! Congratulations...
oh, what a lovely book!
best way to spend a weekend ... outside in the sun with a book. alas, it's frigid winter right now and i have a 5 month old that doesn't give me much time to myself ... but i'm hoping ...
Hmm...I love knitting uninterrupted and being outside with my little one!
I love to spend the weekend puttering in the garden and working on projects that seem to take a back seat to routine life during the week.
A perfect weekend includes a dinner and movie (in) night with family and friends, making some biscuits with my two year old, making a little soap, and doing a little sewing or crafting or maybe some reading. Weekends usually only allow for one of those, though. In an ideal world, there's also an after-church nap on the couch with football or basketball in the background. I like to watch it, but I love to nap to it.
sleep-in, newspaper, coffee, walk around the neighbourhood, good food, and some crafting - perfection!
This time of year my favorite weekend is one spent hiking in the desert with my husband and almost 3 year old, on the hunt for the desert wildflowers that are in bloom.
My favorite way to spend the weekend is to get out and explore our new surroundings. (We moved less than a year ago.) Farmer's markets, state parks, local festivals, etc.
Favorite way to spend a weekend: sleeping in (which never happens), a run, sewing and knitting time, snuggles with the kiddos and Saturday movie and homemade pizza night.
My favorite Saturday is getting up before everyone else and heading down to my sewing room with a fresh cup of tea. I enjoy some private stitch therapy while others snooze. Later it's off for a hike or bike ride with my husband and then a make-your-own-pizza night.
Beautiful book! Favorite way to spend a weekend? Mornings at the coffee shop, reading the paper or a book or working a crossword puzzle with my husband. A local thrift shop for some bargain hunting. A bike ride or hike. Sunday morning farmes market. Dinner with friends. Simple pleasures really are the best!
Since my husband is in medical school my favorite thing to do on a weekend is spend a long slow morning in bed followed by a long afternoon at the beach. Then we come home and make dinner together and either hang out late with friends or watch TV. I like to keep it slow :)
If great weather with the outdoors isn't on my radar - then I'm going to say a snow/blizzard that forces me inside with a quilt, a good glass of red, and multiple DVR's episodes of Grey's Anatomy to watch.
What a fabulous book. Beautiful photos. Looking toward summer...a weekend picnic on the grass with local produce, a game of catch, long walks...what could be better.
Hopefully some inspired stitching!!
oh, this looks lovely! what fun summer projects.
perhaps even doable for a novice sewer like me?
The weather has allowed new weekend activities of late. I've been enjoying gardening, watching the kids run like wild though the grass while I learn to make things out of felt, and sketch ideas for summer clothes.
My favorite weekend is one without plans, when I can do as I please.... a hike with the dogs, breakfast when I feel like it, no laundry to be done... I could go on forever!
Thanks for the great giveaway!
I have this Dreadful Weekend Routine: saturday mornings start with fresh bread, newspaper and crossword, followed by perhaps a visit to the weekly fabric market or the library and then, with a pot of soup simmering away on the stove, it's time for sewing, knitting or gardening weather permitting and then some more sewing, or crafting or knitting or sewing all the way to sunday evening. Yes, routines can be so boring...
Well, this weekend I seem to be sleeping in... Usually a great weekend starts early and I end up getting to do the things I find no time for in the week. Going to the bookstore, or the antique store, stopping by the bakery. Or lying in bed instead and simply reading a book.
Instead of crafting & sewing lately, I've been trying to recreate my crafting room. This involves massive reorganization which seems to affect every bit of my apartment. THIS is my latest weekend obsession.
I would love to own this book.
