why we love halloween

Friday night JR and I were busy sewing Halloween costumes for the kids. It was late, too late, and we were tired. A few times I looked over at JR as he was taking measurements and cutting fabric, and thought.. Why do we do this to ourselves each year?

I guess it's just become part of the tradition of Halloween in our family. Some people go all out with lawn decorations. Some people bake delicious pumpkin treats all October long. But for our family, we make our costumes. We try to use things we have already, or will use again after Halloween. And we try to keep the sewing (and cost) to a minimum. We think a clever costume is better than an elaborate one. And we try to convince the kids to be something unique (though we often fail).

There's just something great about homemade costumes. I like rummaging through our drawers and seeing what we can come up with. I love that the kids get to pick what they want to be and mom and dad make it happen. I know they won't always want to have us make their costumes, so we are enjoying it while we can. And when I look back at pictures from Halloweens past, I remember why we stay up late sewing and glueing and tinkering. Is it worth it? Oh yes, and then some.

you do the best costumes, brooke! that baby ventriloquist dummy is one of my favorites ever. i so agree about homemade costumes - it's now so heartwarming to me to see clearly homemade costumes made with love out there trick-or-treating, and i'm proud to add my kids to the mix! not sure it'll happen every year, but i'll sure try. :)

Totally in the same boat. I'm taking advantage of every year when my kids either don't have an opinion, or can easily be encouraged to pick something unique. No princess Belles or Pirates in my household. My kids' costumes so far:
Daughter: Wild Thing (from Where the Wild Things Are), Peacock, Mighty Mouse
Son: Kick Ass

And yes, they were all hand made.

I love the alligator, you are so industrious and talented.

I live in fear of the day my daughter wants a "store bought" costume just like all her friends! I also kind of fear the year she has an oppinion about her costume, because I design our entire family (me, my sister, my husband, sometimes friends) to coordinate. This year we were Cinderella and her wicked sted sisters. Info on my blog. http://lydiaburchett.blogspot.com/2011/10/my-completed-costume.html

So cute. And in the end making the costumes is worth the effort although I question my sanity sometimes. So far we've done Bob the Builder, a red monster truck, a great white shark and this year my boy wanted to be ....a tiger shark. So out came last year's great white shark costume - I repaired the tail, took off the red gills and added white gills and painted dark grey "tiger" stripes on it - yippee. I'm sure it will be harder next year.

OMG I'm dying. Love these!!

Found your blog through Mara's links (A Blog About Love) and was scrolling through. Your adorable owl costume was the inspiration for my boys' costumes this year, but I didn't know it was you! (Saw the picture on pinterest or google images or something.) So stinkin' cute.
