farewell florent

I was sad to hear that one of my favorite New York restaurants closed this summer. As I was unpacking some boxes this weekend, I came across an old postcard and matchbook from Florent, designed by M&Co. Still beautiful, 22 years later.

so unfortunate to see a favorite place go :(

if you don't mind me asking, i'd love to know what program you use to post your pictures in such an amazingly real looking way. i'd love an email or maybe a post :) about your program/technique. it's so unique and lovely. (came out of the deep, dark lurking place to ask)

Hi, i'm expressing the same sentiments as the above post! For a relatively new blog, your site has such an amazing aesthetic. If you don't mind my suggesting, you should start a section detailing how you got into design, etc.

How do you get your images to look so real online?

I think I've finally come across someone else (you) who saves as many things as I do! Sad to read about the closing.

that is the most delightful matchbook i have ever seen.

Ah, Florent. In design school I had a prof who always insisted on holding class meetings there! It was way cooler than a classroom for sure.

The designer John Varvatos shot his most recent campaign for Converse at Florent---it's a very hip and striking homage to an iconic spot! You can see the campaign here... http://www.highsnobiety.com/news/2008/08/20/converse-by-john-varvatos-fall-2008-get-chucked-ad-campaign/

evocative in so many ways; the item itself, the worn edges, memories stirred...

I know how it feels, my favorite bakery closed down just a little while ago.

I just heard the news...so sad.
I also have collected that stuff, so well designed.

Oh -- I didn't know that it closed. A little sad to hear. It was one of the first places I wanted to see with Alysha and Tom on our first visits to NYC. I guess I'll quit telling my history students to go there when they visit.
