a healthy start to the new year

Most New Years resolutions include something about health.. but I often lose my focus after a few weeks. I get busy and forget that I was trying not to eat sugar, or that I promised I would work out more. This year I'm trying something new.. thanks to my dad.

My dad has been avidly studying nutrition the past few years. He's read over 100 books on the subject, scours the web everyday for interesting articles, and has even started reading medical journals (just for fun!). I live nearby, so alot of our conversations start out "I was just reading this great book.." or "Did you see that cheese article in the NY Times?"

He's taught me a lot, and I've been encouraging him to start his own blog for quite some time to share his wealth of knowledge. It's now up and running and it's called Word of Wisdom Living.

Last week started one year of "Healthy Changes", one thing you can change in your diet or lifestyle each week. He'll post one each Monday for the rest of the year. The first Healthy Change is about drinking soda, and you can read it here. This week's change has to do with fried foods. You can even download a little sign each week to help remind you.

The blog is a family affair. I'll be helping him along, suggesting topics and doing the design work. My little sister does the photography. My mom acts as editor and cheerleader. There will be recipes (like this one for a healthy breakfast) and book reviews, links to nutrition blogs and interesting news articles.. lots of little ways to make your family healthier, one step at a time.

I know I'm biased, but my dad is a really smart guy.. and I think we could all learn a lot from him. Here's to a happy (and healthy) 2011!

Pretty awesome, Brooke. Thanks for encouraging him and for making it a family endeavor! Sharing it on my blog this week too... though I may need one last order of French Fries before I commit to Challenge #2. ;-)

I once read a book (years ago) with a similar theme- I think it was Change your Health is 12 twelve weeks or something like that but each day presented a possible change and I couldn't keep up. But I have been thinking about it lately and wishing I could read it again and then the post about your dad's new blog. Love the concept and I'm heading on over now to check it out. I have lost 7 kilos in the last 6 months by introducing small changes and walking everyday. Meadering really along the sand with my dog. Can't wait to be inspired.

Good for him! And I feel ahead of the game - I gave up Coke (the main soda I drank) about a year and a half ago and decided to stop drinking all soda just over a week ago. So far so good. I still drink sweet tea, but I'm thinking the bit of sugar I add can't be as much as a soda, right? (I hope.)

Yay! I've spent a lot of time wondering exactly what a Word of Wisdom diet would look like but never had the gumption to actually get down to working the details. Your Dad rocks! I'll be sure to pop over to his blog and let him know as well. Thank you for encouraging him to put it out there.

Brooke, this is YOUR dad? Rad! I was recently introduced to this site and immediately added it to my reader. Studying nutrition is one of my pet hobbies too and I was so excited to find his blog because I could tell he knows his stuff. So fun, can't wait to read more...

Goodness; I found that Word of Wisdom blog through someone else a few days ago and was terribly impressed. You can just tell by the semantics of the whole thing that the writer is sharp and well-read. Today I read this post and it all clicked. Of course he's your father! Your blog is equally well-written and bright, but knowing that the two of you are related, plus reading the backstory in this post, makes me further interested in keeping up with what your dad has to say.

Keep up the good work, Brooke's family.
