one. two. three. four. five.

My sweet baby is now a little boy, who seems to grow taller right before my very eyes. People say that time flies, but it seems to soar by leaps and bounds now that I have children. It leaves me grateful for every photo I snapped of him when he was tiny, every little bit of blurry video, every smudged impression from his tiny hands. Because that wee thing shown above turned five last week. And each time I look at him now, I still see that sweet little baby and his big eyes looking back at me.

The birthday party we had planned for him at his favorite park, with cousins and friends and family, got rained out. We were at the pool enjoying the sunshine on Friday, but come Saturday morning as we drove to the park, the raindrops started to fall. I didn't have a rain plan (this is sunny southern California!). But we scrambled and moved the party to our house, about fifteen minutes before it began. Phone calls were made. Rooms were quickly cleaned. Food that had just been packed for the park was unpacked. Balloons were hung. And do you know what happened next?

Guests arrived. Children played. Rocket balloons went sailing in every direction. The pinata was broken open. Children spontaneously sang Happy Birthday. Candles were lit and blown out. And my boy smiled and smiled.

I did manage to snap a few photos from the party.. coming shortly.

My daughter is 8 weeks old, and maybe it's hormones, but this post made me cry! Such a sweet sentiment and I'm scared of the time going by too fast! (Although not too scared when it's time for the 2:30 am feeding).

Even with perfect planning - sometimes the thing you wing is even more perfect. Sounds like it was a great day for both of you!

Sounds like it all worked out in the end... can't wait to see a few pics from the party!

Sweet. Mine turned 5 this year too. Breaks my heart how quickly it went by - and more so how the next 5 will be even faster. Must take more pictures.

happy birthday to your boy! my girl just turned two last month and she seemed like a big girl already. I can't imagine what's it going to be when she's going to be 5!

Wow, 5 seems so big! My daughter turns 2 this year, and I'm having a hard time with that!

This is parenting! Being ready at a moment's notice to spontaneously change direction! My child folk are two years less 14 days apart and their February western party was cancelled because the whole family was sick with the flu. On Friday I am throwing the western party - a la surprise - in our backyard.

Well done!

happy happy birthday to your boy - that first shot is adorable! I always said having children are like a bizarre timewarp. on one hand it races by, but on the other, it's like they've been with you forever and it's hard to imagine a time without them. looking forward to your party pics!

How sweet. My boy will be turning 5 at the end of August ... whenever I look at his baby pictures, I get this feeling that I need another baby ... very short lived feeling ... but a warm thought in those few seconds. ;o) Thanks for sharing such a precious moment ... Happy 5th!

Five was a hard one for me...seemed to take him out of preschooler-dom and straight into kid-dom! Happy birthday to your kid! :)

What a great picture of the baby! but now he's a 5 year old. It's pretty amazing isn't it. Sounds like the party would have been a hit no matter where it was held.
